The North Carolina Standard Course of Study states: “Our goal continues to be, more than ever, to provide for students an education in the arts reinforced through the recognition that the arts do not exist alone, but are an integral part of life.” For students, the arts provide a vehicle for making meaning visible, allowing them to “see” the story as it unfolds. The “language arts” develop in concert:

     drawing supports writing and

     writing supports reading.

This session will provide lots of strategies and ideas for engaging students in exciting literacy activities. All make-it and take-it materials will be provided. Presenters will be Carol Bennett, WRESA Elementary Education Coordinator, Autumn Hayball, art graduate, and Amy Hendrix, entrepreneur: SimplyStunning4U. This interactive workshop provides a snapshot of the comprehension strategies while taking the participants on a journey into their own reading. It is based on the premise that for adults to understand and teach the comprehension strategies outlined in Mosaic of Thought and 7 Keys to Comprehension, they must first consciously apply them in their own reading and discuss them with peers. An internationally-known speaker and workshop leader, Susan Zimmermann is co-author of the educational bestsellers Mosaic of Thought, Second Edition (2007) and 7 Keys to Comprehension (with Chryse Hutchins, 2003). She co-founded and served as the Executive Director of the Denver-based Public Education and Business Coalition, an organization that has spearheaded ground-breaking comprehension work. During her ten years there, she initiated numerous programs to improve the quality of public schools, including the Reading Project, which has been implemented in more than one hundred schools and provides the examples in Mosaic of Thought, Second Edition, and 7 Keys. Currently a full-time speaker and writer, Susan has given hundreds of workshops, keynotes, and summer institutes in over 40 states, throughout Canada, and in Mexico on ways to deepen reading and writing experiences for adults and children. What participants have said about Susan Zimmermann's sessions: "Wow! Susan Zimmermann was incredible. I wish I had sent more teachers. Please do this again. Very high quality training. Thanks so much! Very motivating and informative!"  If you have questions, contact Carol Bennett at cbennett@wresa.org or 828.418.0011, ext. 17.
