What is We The People: The Citizen and the Constitution?

It is a program to promote civic competence and responsibility among the nation’s elementary and secondary students.

The instructional program enhances students understanding of the institutions of American constitutional democracy. At the same time, students discover the contemporary relevance of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

The
culminating activity is a simulated congressional hearing in which students "testify" before a panel of judges. Students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of constitutional principles and have opportunities to evaluate, take, and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary issues.

What is Project Citizen?

The primary focus of this program is on the role of state and local governments in the U.S. federal system.

The curriculum involves an entire class of students or members of youth or adult groups in a series of structured, cooperative-learning activities that are guided by teachers, organization leaders, and adult volunteers. Working in four cooperative teams, the students learn to interact with their government through a five-step process.

Would you like simple and easy technology resources to integrate into any classroom tomorrow? Some of the tools we will be working with are: Quia, Moodle, Wikispaces, Google Apps and many animation tools like Voki, Domo, Wobook and Timetoast. We will be talking about flash tools and polling and surveying options too. No computer expertise needed, just an interest in using technology in the classroom. Bring a laptop if you have one so you can bookmark what we talk about. (There will be laptops available to borrow for the session.) Jennifer Drury and Dwayne Squire’s seasoned (low sodium) teachers from Canton Middle School will be sharing what they have learned about integrating quick and easy technology tools into all subject areas. Special-area and content-area teachers have moments every day where they could help students build crucial reading skills. These moments arise naturally out of the day’s instruction. Reinforcement could take place just as naturally, and with little effort, if teachers were prepared. The impact on learning and end-of-grade test scores could be big! In Sync with Success will help teachers seize those valuable moments.

Oct. 22, 8:30-3:30:  Learn the 7 proficient reader strategies. Discover how these strategies work across subject areas from music to math.  Dec. 3, 8:30-3:30:  Learn reflective thinking and/or writing exercises that move information from short-term to long-term memory in any subject.  Feb. 25, 8:30-3:30: Learn vocabulary strategies for remembering words in your class.  April 8, 8:30-3:30: Study inferring, determining importance and synthesis strategies so that students comprehend any task. Due April 8: Completed personal inquiry project based on learning in the class. Trying one idea in the classroom and reflecting on it rounds out the credits so that teachers receive 30 contact hours (3 CEUs).

After earning her Masters degree from Ohio State, Karen Haag moved to North Carolina. She continued teaching and in 1985 became a consultant with the National Writing Project at UNC-Charlotte. In total, Karen taught grades 2 through college for 20 years in New York, Ohio and North Carolina. She then became a Literacy Coach for 14 years in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and most recently, Cabarrus County Schools, North Carolina. Karen now consults and coaches full time.  At the University of NC Charlotte, Karen found her calling as a teacher researcher. To that end, Karen interviews students and teachers, videotapes classes in action, writes about what works and needs work in her much loved daybook, and maintains this Website. In workshops and as co-chair of the Teacher Research Institute each summer, Karen encourages teachers to reflect on their classroom practices. She says, "Teacher-researcher is not a fancy title only few of us have. Every teacher who considers how to improve her classroom is a teacher researcher."

For the past 10 years, Karen has shared that research with schools in several states. Karen coaches participants to improve their teaching of writing and reading comprehension. In addition, her workshops are popular because she combines theory and practice and shares her work with participants through videotapes. She posts lessons and strategies on her websites: www.liketoread.com and www.liketowrite.com.  She is a newly published author.  Karen co-wrote Thinking Out Loud on Paper, Student Daybooks as a Tool for Learning published by Heinemann in 2008.

Are you tired of doing the same old thing in your classes?   Are you ready to spice things up and try something new?  How would you like having GPS devices brought to your classroom when you requested them?  Join us for a day of training, courtesy of The Science House of NC State University.  We will use GPS devices to explore new and exciting ways to teach science concepts.  You will have the opportunity to investigate many types of caches, how to incorporate the technology into your existing lessons, and also have time to create new lessons.  No previous experience with GPS units required!  This workshop is appropriate for 5-12th grade teachers (especially wonderful for integrated lessons).  Physics, Chemistry, Physical Science, Earth Science and Biology content will be addressed and aligned to the NCSCOS. Suggestions for use in other curriculum areas such as math and history will also be addressed. Michelle Benigno, The Science House, will be conducting this workshop. Flexible Time Frame/Complete Assignments at Your Convenience

Registration Fee: $50

This online session will be structured following the Partners for Mathematics Learning professional development that was offered during the summer of 2010. It is geared toward elementary mathematics teachers in grades 3-5. “Teachers make hundreds of decisions each day and thousands each week: what content to teach; what success looks like; what students already know about this content; what tasks and activities to use; what students are learning; what misconceptions they have; and what they still need to learn. Formative assessment generates the data needed for these decisions” (Partners for Mathematics Learning 2010-2011 Professional Development). This online professional development will be focused on the following learning modules:

Module 1: Learning Targets
Module 2: Questioning and Task Selection
Module 3: Inferences and Feedback
Module 4: Making Students Active Partners
Module 5: Decisions about Next Steps
Module 6: Collaboration around Assessment

Participants who complete all assignments will receive a certificate for 15 contact hours (1.5 CEUs). Facilitator will be Carol Bennett, Ed.D., Elementary Education Coordinator. If you have questions, contact Carol at 828.418.0011, ext. 17 or cbennett@wresa.org.

Are you looking for a way to better connect with your 6-12 grade student who often seems much more interested in whatever they are plugged into then what is going on in your classroom? Believe it or not, media can be the bridge that can make this happen! We will spend the morning identifying the characteristics of millennials and how to use this information to your benefit in the classroom by engaging them with their media. In the afternoon, we will use media tools to help students display their knowledge of the content. Nancy Ruppert, a professor at UNCA and April Spencer, Secondary Education Coordinator at WRESA, will be leading this course. Ever wonder why that when you divide by a faction your answer gets larger, and why we tell children you can’t take a big number from a small number, or why key words (i.e., “more” means add) really don’t work? This K-12 training helps teachers understand how to make strong mathematical connections in order to explain the procedures used in  mathematics. It will ensure that you are able to help your students demystify and conceptualize mathematics instead of only developing the procedural knowledge to produce the “right” answer. Your students will find a new love of mathematics when you  allow them to begin to reason about the math rather than just “do” the math.  Presenter will be Chris Cain, Professor at Mars Hill College. If you have questions, please contact April Spencer at 418.0011 ext. 20 or aspencer@wresa.org.
