This interactive planning and "make it / take it " session will bring together a multitude of differentiated ideas and strategies that will enhance any 3-8 classroom in preparation for ensuring that our students are going to be able to "show what they know" on the NC Reading Comprehension EOG. Participants will learn about, and walk away with, ideas and materials to use directly with their students in those all-important days to come in these final weeks before assessments. Participants who wish to actively participate in the "make it and take it" are encouraged to bring the following materials if possible: scissors, stapler, glue stick, pack of 100 3X5 colored index cards, pack of 100 white 4x6 index cards, single hole puncher, small box of brads, 6 blank CD's (can be old and used ones / doesn't matter what kind), 12 pocket file folders, pack of colored card stock (about 25 sheets) or construction paper, black sharpie pen, magic markers, 1 shower liner curtain (white or light color) which can be bought at Walmart for about $2.69, and a tri-fold "science" board (these are really more useful if cut into 2 to make 2 EOG Station boards). Special Note: Remember to bring a camera with you to take pictures of those things you may not get a chance to make that day. The presenter for this session will be Kathy Bumgardner. If you have questions, contact Carol Bennett at cbennett@wresa.org or 828.418.0011, ext. 17.

NOTE: The special education teacher must be in attendance with the regular education teachers they are co-teaching with. Administrators are also welcome to join as well. This one-day Co-teaching Training is characterized by a high degree of input and participation from Regular and Special Education staff members with minimal emphasis placed on lecture. The models for co-teaching and adapting instruction are presented in the morning session. Participants will have the opportunity to examine their current practices vis-a-vis the model being presented. The remainder of the training provides examples of how to adapt instruction to make it appropriate to the needs of the wide variety of learners present in an inclusion classroom. Participants will become the students. The room will be reorganized to model how to set up an inclusion class for instruction under the model discussed in the AM session. Participants will be placed in groups based on their learning styles and will receive instruction in all 4 content areas (Math, Language Arts/English, Social Studies/History, and Science). Participating teaching teams regularly report discovering untapped potential in students whom they previously regarded as beyond the reach of their efforts. They also express a willingness to accept more responsibility for educating these students. As students come to accept the new methodologies and teaching dynamics in the classroom, there is evidence of increased cooperation and respect among students, between teachers and students, and between general and special education teachers. Rick Welsh, VP of NoBox Inc., will present this session. He holds a MS degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and began working with the public schools as a licensed speech-language pathologist in 1980. Rick has functioned as an educational consultant since 1992. While working with the public schools in NC, he designed and implemented a classroom-based service delivery model for students with language disorders and auditory processing deficits. This program yielded improved classroom performance for the identified students in his caseload and also provided effective intervention for students who were not identified, but who were at risk for academic failure. If you have questions about this session, contact April Spencer at aspencer@wresa.org or 828.418.0011, ext. 20.

This online class will involve participants in book study discussions that focus on implementing the teaching strategies identified in this extraordinary resource. Amazon describes this excellent book in the following : “The read-aloud of yesteryear was often limited in its ambition and application - a well-intended routine for getting students' attention or settling them down. But today's read-aloud is a vibrant, deliberate part of good teaching, an essential, effective strategy for introducing sophisticated ideas to young learners throughout the school day by immersing them in rich language and literate behaviors. The influence of reading aloud can be profound, and Learning Under the Influence of Language and Literature shows you how to plan for and implement the read-aloud for maximum instructional effect. Learning Under the Influence of Language and Literature revolutionizes the read-aloud. Lester Laminack and Reba Wadsworth lay out six types of read-alouds each of which targets key instructional goals, including:
Whether you read aloud once a day, or six times a day, Laminack and Wadsworth give you all the strategies you need to make the read-aloud a successful and effective way to lead your students to new understandings. You'll discover how, why, and when to read aloud, and find both specific suggestions for planning instruction around it and numerous ideas for entry points into it. Best of all, they provide an extensively annotated list of four hundred titles to use with each of the six types of read-aloud, including ample suggestions for how each fits within the reading and writing curriculum” www.amazon.com. Participants must purchase their own book prior to the class. Participants will receive a certificate for 10 contact hours upon completion of all book study discussion assignments.
