Ag in the Classroom is an educational program designed to provide teachers with quality materials to teach students, through North Carolina competency-based lessons, about the sources of their food and fiber, and the importance of agriculture to the economy. The mission of Ag in the Classroom is to provide quality materials and instruction to public and private school teachers enabling them to instill in students an appreciation for our state's food and fiber production, the people involved with the various stages of that production, and the industry's statewide economic impact. In this session we will look at the numerous FREE lessons and activities that align with the Science essential standards, including how to start a strawberry garden project. Growing a strawberry garden at your school provides students with a hands-on space to explore the life cycle of a plant and an understanding of cultivating food. Gardens can foster life skills like critical-thinking, problem solving, responsibility, communication and positive self-esteem, as well as, real-life application of writing and reading skills. If you have questions, contact Carol Bennett at cbennett@wresa.org or 828.418.0011, ext. 17. Participants will receive a certificate for 5 contact hours.

Are your students unmotivated? Learn what might be going on in the brains of these students and discover strategies that will engage and motivate. We will touch on some of the most common learning disabilities and explore what works and doesn’t work for these children. This workshop will focus on principles derived from brain research and how you can use those principles in your classroom to turn around frustrated and failing students. This workshop is designed for any teacher in Grades 4-12. Ms. Scherping is a NBCT who has completed over 80 hours of workshops with Eric Jensen on brain compatible teaching and learning. She has presented at the national ASCD conference, national NBPTS conference and other regional, state, and local conferences. Currently she has just returned to the classroom and is teaching 6th grade social studies in Polk County. If you have questions, contact April Spencer at 828.418.0011, ext. 20 or aspencer@wresa.org.

Some teachers "teach to the middle" and hope for the best, or they struggle to diversify their instruction. Teaching the new common core standards while struggling to tailor instruction for individual student needs can be a daunting task for even the most gifted teacher. This session will show you how to provide the right level of challenge for gifted students, for students who lag far behind grade level, and for everyone in between. You will learn strategies to deliver instruction in ways that meet the needs of auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners. You will learn to engage students by tapping into their personal interests. Differentiating instruction—differentiating content, process, and products—requires teachers to be crystal clear about what they are trying to teach. Teachers can accomplish this by using a range of strategies such as cooperative learning, multi-age grouping, stations, compacting, agendas, addressing multiple intelligences, and tiered activities-where the teacher keeps the concepts and skills the same for all students but provides routes of access that vary in terms of complexity, abstractness, and open-endedness (Tomlinson, ASCD, 2000). If you have questions, contact Carol Bennett at cbennett@wresa.org or 828.418.0011, ext. 17. Participants will receive a certificate for 5 contact hours.

Males make up half of our classrooms. This workshop will spend the day looking at the special issues around why our boys are not being successful in the current educational setting and the causes as well as possible solutions. We will also discuss the social, physical and emotional development of boys as well as the latest brain research. There will be information on the double whammy that males from poverty face in your classrooms. Dr. Paul Slocomb’s book will serve as the jumping off point for the conversation. This workshop is appropriate for any educator who wants a better picture of our males K- 12 and how we are not using the most current research to benefit them. April Spencer will be your presenter for this workshop. If you have questions, contact her at 828.418.0011, ext. 20 or aspencer@wresa.org. Registration Fee: $35 Registration Deadline: Nov 23 |

Teaching 21st Century skills (global awareness, critical thinking in collaboration, media literacy, contextual learning, and civic engagement) is critical for our children’s success. Carrie Wagner incorporates these skills as she provides a framework for progressing from cultural exploration to global engagement. The day includes hands-on exercises and lesson plans that can be used across grade levels. Teachers will be equipped to facilitate exercises that not only build cross-cultural skills but also provide opportunities to participate in activities that enhance global citizenship. Carrie’s 11 years with Habitat for Humanity International as an international trainer and her 7 years facilitating cross-cultural exercises in Buncombe County demonstrate her experience and passion for engaging people in global learning. This online book study class will explore Eric Jenson's book Tools for Engagement: Managing Emotional States for Learner Success. This time-tested book outlines numerous practical techniques and activities that teacher's can use to produce deeper learning engagement in their classrooms. Based on working with student states, the book is set up according to the different states a teacher would want to achieve or modify in the classroom, depending on the type of learning being pursued. For each state it explains what the state is, why it is important, how long it lasts, what brain activity is involved, which body language is associated with the state, what foods affect it, what music affects or contributes to the state, and instructional strategies to implement for each state. This book study is a good prerequisite to Eric Jensen's "Teaching with the Brain in Mind" workshop which will be offered on March 29, 2012 at the WRESA (YES! Eric Jensen is coming to the WRESA!). The flexible format of this online class will allow participants to read and respond within their own schedule. If you have questions, contact Carol Bennett at cbennett@wresa.org or 828.418.0011, ext. 17. Participants will receive a certificate for 10 contact hours for successful completion of the book study assignments.
