teachers inform their instruction
through on-going and frequent
assessments. In this session we will
explore strategies to access multiple
pathways for learning, foster
"intrinsic" motivation, use
"instructional intelligence" and
flexible groupings, harness the power of
visual tools, scaffold instruction for
struggling learners, and provide
challenging options for advanced
learners as described in Judith Dodge’s
book: 25 Quick Formative
Assessments for a Differentiated
Classroom: Easy, Low-Prep Assessments
That Help You Pinpoint Students' Needs
and Reach All Learners.

science. Let us help! Join us for a day
where we investigate matter
and light (from
4th grade NES) with active
investigations that weave history, math,
reading, writing and fun into lessons!
Research shows students learn more when
concepts are not taught in isolation.
The more connections a teacher helps
students make to a topic, then the more
connections students make in their
brain. Come learn to ‘weave’ and watch
students achieve! This workshop is
appropriate for elementary and middle
school teachers. The example
lessons we will use are from 4th grade.

Interested in
strategies to develop a language rich
classroom that provide students with the
rigor expected from the Common Core?
The session will provide teachers with
concrete strategies to ensure
appropriate text complexity and
scaffolding techniques for tiered
vocabulary. Participants will learn how
to create a language rich learning
climate that uses Language Amplification
strategies. Establishing language norms
to be modeled in all content areas and
all grades (K-12), teachers will learn
deliberate and effective strategies to
help students who are acquiring English
proficiency, or English speakers whose
vocabulary bank is limited. Language
amplification will help students
understand concepts within context and
proper syntax. Opportunities will be
provided to make the connection between
oral language amplification and enhanced
written language skills. In addition,
participants will learn how to use
Revised Blooms Taxonomy (RBT) question
cards to increase rigor and instill
higher order thinking skills in all
content areas and all grades. Using the
rubrics on the back of the question
cards, participants will understand the
importance of framing students’ answers
to facilitate more accurate, detailed,
and compelling student responses.
Participants will leave with
question/rubric templates to customize
according to students’ literacy,
language, and text complexity level.
RBT cards are highly engaging, an
excellent strategy to increase language
proficiency, and use efficient classroom
management strategies. This session's
presenter is Virginia Cárdenas, a School
Transformation Coach from NCDPI. She
presented this summer at the Summer
Leadership Conference and we have asked
her to come back. If you have

Have you ever wondered
why some students cannot understand or
recall important content after a 24-hour
period? If your students are not
learning the way you are teaching them,
then you must teach them the way they
learn!
Experience 20 instructional strategies
(based on brain research and learning
style theory) that maximize memory and
minimize forgetting. Increase learning
for all students when strategies like
drawing, metaphor, movement, music, and
storytelling are used to teach
curriculum objectives and meet
international standards. Explore
research that shows why these strategies
are preferable to others. Ensure that
brains retain key concepts, not only for
tests, but for life! This workshop has
been called both professionally and
personally life-changing and lots of
fun!
