DPI content sessions are required and designed for the local team members who attended the Summer Institute for each content area. One additional person may also register and attend the content session with that Summer Institute team member. Each participant will then be expected to work with their local professional development teams to present the information, strategies and resources gained in these sessions with teachers in their LEA or Charter. |

This two-day training session will assist social studies educators in developing their local curriculum around rigorous, meaningful and engaging units of instruction to support the new K-12 Social Studies Essential Standards. During the workshop, participants will collaborate to design a sample unit that can be used with other social studies educators in their district or school. Ultimately, this training session will help social studies educators make more informed decisions about what students should understand, know, and be able to do according to the NC Social Studies Essential Standards. To provide participants with a deeper understanding of the Educator Value-Added Assessment System (EVAAS) in order to prepare them for making productive data-based decisions in their school or district. All sessions unless otherwise indicated are held at the WRESA - (click for directions) Online Registration for December 11, 2012 Session Audience: School-Based Administrators and Media and Technology Summer Institute Representatives. Capacity: 2-3 representatives per LEA or Charter School. [Each LEA or Charter School has 2 Summer Institute representatives]. NOTE: The afternoon session is a repeat of the morning session. Please choose one.
Topic: Data Literacy December 11, 2012: Data Literacy for Media and Technology Programs Online Registration This session will assist administrators in being able to identify data sources that can assist districts/schools in evaluating Media and Technology Programs. Data-driven decision-making is defined as the “process of collecting, analyzing, reporting, and using data for school improvement” (Dahlkemper, 2002). We will share and analyze data sources that are available to inform decisions and evaluate the programs. Participants will understand the principles of data literacy and will identify ways to build on current data to improve data literacy for their schools. (This session will end with a connection to Evaluating Teaching With Technology and using data to review processes) Registration Fee: $0 Registration Deadline: December 4, 2012

Upcoming ITES Topics (You will need to register for each session you attend! 01/25/2013: Evaluating Teaching With Technology (Online Registration form coming soon.) Participants will examine observation strategies for Teachers, Media Coordinators and Technology Facilitators based on the North Carolina Educator Evaluation System. During the workshop, participants will align these strategies to the NCEES, with specific focus upon IV-D (knowledge of appropriate use of technology to maximize student learning; helping students use technology to learn content, think critically, solve problems, discern reliability, etc.). Participants will also receive an overview of TPACK, a model for the integration of pedagogical, content and technology knowledges into classroom practices. (This session will end by transitioning to Digital Literacy training and the ethical digital citizen).

Mathematics: Fall RESA 2012 To drive math instruction in school districts, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Math Consultants will be modeling the effective use of the book, Accessible Mathematics: Ten Instructional Shifts That Raise Student Achievement by Steven Leinwand. Participants will receive recommendations regarding the use of this document to lead LEA book studies, the book, and a Facilitator’s Guide. Audience: Open registration for School & District Administrators, Lead Teachers. Classroom Teachers and Instructional Coaches from any NC LEA and/or Charter School. Capacity: Up to 100 participants. The 21st Century Skills presentation provides an overview of the Framework for 21st Century Learning. Through hands-on activities, participants will identify 21st century skills in a classroom setting and participate in brainstorming ideas for inclusion of 21st century skills across all disciplines. In addition, the Technology, Pedagogy and Content Knowledge model (TPACK) will reinforce the importance of evaluating technology use and effective integration.
