Mathematics (Common Core Follow-up Session)

All 6-12 teachers will need to bring a TI-84 calculator.

WRESA Professional Development for Mathematics will focus on specific content from each of the 2 grade bands. Content lessons will be modeled with participants being the students. After debriefing the mathematics we will have participants examine the lesson structure used. Connections will be made to Van de Walle’s Before, During, and After Lesson Plan. Additional connections to the Common Core State Standards For Mathematical Practice, 21st Century Skills, New Teacher Evaluation Standards, Universal Design for Learning, Professional Learning Communities, English Language Learners, and Exceptional Children will be emphasized.

Sessions are designed for the LEA Team members that attended the summer sessions, however you may bring additional staff as long as space allows. We can accommodate two people per LEA. If we have more space available two weeks before the event is scheduled, we will send an email and open seats based upon a first come first serve basis. Participants are asked to bring laptops to all sessions. The registration for these events will be on the WRESA website. Participants must be registered through our website in order to keep accurate information.


 

NCDPI Mathematics Section:


Barbara Bissell became the Mathematics Section Chief for DPI in October 2010. Prior experience includes 12 years in Central Office in Charlotte, a number of years as a classroom teacher grades 3 – 7, and work with the AFT in Oakland, California. Her teaching career began as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Kampala, Uganda.

Kitty Rutherford is an Elementary Mathematics Consultant with the NC Department of Public Instruction. She is a former classroom teacher with over 20 years of teaching experience. As part of her work, she supports elementary (K-5) teachers and administrators with effective instructional and assessment practices. A graduate of East Carolina University where she earned her B.S. in Early Childhood Education, M.A. in Elementary Education, Reading Certification, and Academically Gifted Certification. She recently completed an Elementary Mathematics Add-On Licensure from The University of North Carolina-Greensboro.

Amy Scrinzi is an Elementary Mathematics Consultant with the NC Department of Public Instruction. As part of her work, she supports teachers and administrators with effective instructional and assessment practices with a special passion for early childhood mathematics. A graduate of James Madison University and Bank Street College of Education, Amy recently received her Ed.D in Curriculum and Instruction from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a former classroom teacher, having taught preschool through third grade.

Robin Barbour spent the first 22 years of her career as a mathematics and science classroom teacher. During this time she earned her National Board Certification, her AIG certification and her Masters in Middle School Mathematics Education from UNC. She was recognized as the Outstanding Secondary Mathematics Teachers for Durham County in 2007. Robin came to the NC Department of Public Instruction in January 2008, as a Secondary Mathematics Consultant, specializing in Middle School Mathematics.

Johannah Mayor is a Secondary Mathematics Consultant with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. As part of her work, she supports teachers and administrators with effective instructional and assessment practices. She also holds a major role in the implementation of Integrated Mathematics and the development of NCFALCON. Johannah has a B.S. in Mathematics and a MEd in Curriculum and Instruction. Having been a classroom teacher for 15 years, her last appointment was teaching Calculus and Integrated Mathematics in the Public Schools of North Carolina.

WRESA Professional Development for English Language Arts will focus on the Six Shifts in ELA /Literacy in the Common Core State Standards. Brief segments of videos explaining the shifts will be shared with time for group discussions of each shift. Consultants will follow-up with suggested resources, “Less is More: Teaching Literature with Short Texts” by Kimberly Hill Campbell and “Deeper Reading” by Kelly Gallagher.

NCDPI ELA Section:


Julie Joslin serves as the Section Lead for English Language Arts. Julie taught at the middle school level for ten years, high school for nine years, ESOL for two years, and enjoyed one year of second grade. She worked as a literacy coach, building administrator, and district director prior to joining DPI. Julie holds a masters degree in English as well as a doctorate in Educational Leadership.

Lisa McIntosh serves as an Elementary Consultant for English Language Arts. Lisa taught at the elementary level for 9 years and in various Gifted Education programs for 14 years. She worked as a Lead teacher in English Language Arts for grades 3-8 and an Instructional Facilitator in grades 3-5 prior to joining DPI in 2007. Lisa holds an Elementary Education degree in K-6 and a Master of Arts degree in Administration and Curriculum. She is certified in Gifted Education K-12.

Dan Tetreault serves as an elementary English Language Arts consultant and Responsiveness to Instruction (RtI) coordinator. Dan taught at the early elementary level, teaching kindergarten and first grade. He worked as a literacy trainer with the North Carolina Teacher Academy prior to joining DPI and served as a PreK-3 consultant within the North Carolina Office of Early Learning for five years. Dan holds a bachelors degree in Elementary Education and a master’s degree in Educational Supervision of Curriculum and Instruction.

Cynthia Dewey serves as an English Language Arts Consultant for grades 3-8. Cynthia’s teaching experience includes elementary, middle, high school, and university levels and involves work in several states. She also served as a literacy coach and central office administrator prior to joining NCDPI. Cynthia holds a Master’s Degree in Reading Education as well as a Ph.D. in Education specializing in Language, Literacy, and Culture.

These meetings are designed to obtain input from teachers on the new accountability standards in relation to Standard 6:  Teacher Effectiveness.

Who to send?

There will be three of these input sessions throughout the school year. Districts will have the opportunity to send six people altogether - - 2 representatives at each session. Consider sending four teacher leaders from various grade spans and two administrative leaders.

 


Teacher Effectiveness and New Accountability Model Meetings – RESA Partnership

Purpose:

To bring together groups of teachers and leaders to learn about the State’s educator effectiveness initiatives, as well as provide feedback on proposed policies; and to discuss the proposed new school accountability model, why we believe it will lead to better outcomes for students in North Carolina and gather feedback on the proposed model.

Phase 2 Regional Principal and Assistant Principal Trainings

Follow-up to the Common Core Meeting in August. Updated information on assessments will be given as well as a continued look at standards and resources. Jan King and Joyce Gardner, our regional PD consultants, will be the presenters. The audience is assistant principals, lead teachers, and principals.

Same 3 hour presentation offered in a morning and then afternoon session. Participants should only register for one of the two sessions.


Phase 2 Principal Training for Common Core and Essential Standards

This training, intended for school-based administrators, will focus on instructional leadership for rolling-out the new standards. The half day session will include opportunities for collaboration, an update on assessment, a look at available resources, and activities designed to assist administrators in knowing next steps for building-level implementation. This session will be facilitated by Jan King and Joyce Gardner, regional PD leads.

Phase III Regional Principal and Assistant Principal Training for Information and Technology Essential Standards (ITES)
December 2, 2011 at the WRESA (large conference room)


Morning session: 9:00am till Noon – Afternoon Session 1:00 pm till 4:00pm The same 3 hour presentation is offered in a morning and then an afternoon session. Participants should only register for one of the two sessions. Participants please bring laptops.

This is a continuation of the Common Core Essential Standards Phase I & II trainings. The agenda will include hands-on activities, group discussions, and sharing of resources to help site administrators support teachers as they begin to implement the new Information and Technology Essential Standards. The audience is principals, assistant principals and lead teachers. DPI Instructional Technology Consultants; Melanie Honeycutt, Cathy Matthews, and Mary Lou Daily will be conducting this training. Jan King and Joyce Gardner our regional PD consultants will also be assisting in the training.
