Module 5

Text must be selected before editing or formatting. This module covers the following:

*      Selecting text

*      Editing text

*      Formatting text using the Formatting toolbar

 

*      Formatting text using the Format-Font menu

 

 

Selecting text 

Activity 1: Selecting text 

1. Open the document Word Practice One that you downloaded earlier

2. Select the first sentence "Believe it or not, some things in life are still free, the respect of close friends, the luxury of a day or two in the quiet country, or the practice of free choice."  There are two ways to do this- 

a) click and drag: Position the pointer (I-beam) at either end of the sentence then click (hold) and drag to the other end. When you let go, the sentence will be highlighted or selected.

b) Ctrl + Click: Position the cursor (blinking vertical line inside the sentence) by clicking. Then hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and click.

3. Practice selecting text using the various methods described below.

Other text selection shortcuts  include:

·        Click + Shift + Click to select all text between the click points

·        Double Click in the word you wish to select

·        Triple click in the paragraph you want to select

·        Click in the left hand margin to select a line or text

·        Click and drag down the left hand margin to select multiple lines

·        Use the Ctrl + A key to select the entire document

Editing text  

Activity 2: Editing text  

1. If necessary, open the document Word Practice One that you downloaded earlier

2. Practice editing text by each of the following methods:

a) Deleting text: Click anywhere inside the text and use the following keys:

     Backspace - eliminates letter or space to the left of the cursor

     Delete - eliminates letter or space to the right of the cursor

b) Inserting text: Position the cursor at the end of the first sentence and type "In fact, it has been said that the best things in life are free."

c) Cutting and Pasting: 

     Select the last sentence "As you may know, a happy condition comes from a state of mind.” Click on the   Cut button on the Standard toolbar.

    Click in front of the first sentence and click the Paste button on the Standard toolbar .When cutting and pasting text, you may have to insert spaces where necessary

 

Cut, Copy, and Paste commands are also available from the Edit menu and as keyboard shortcuts:

Cut:     Ctrl+X

Copy:  Ctrl+C

Paste:  Ctrl+V

Formatting text using the Formatting toolbar

Activity 3: Formatting text using the Formatting toolbar

1. If necessary, open the document Word Practice One that you downloaded earlier

2. Select the entire document by holding the Ctrl key down and typing A

3. Practice formatting the selected text using the formatting toolbar:

Styles, Font, Font Size, Bold, Italic, Underline, Alignment (Left, Center...), Numbering, Bullets, Font Color

 

Point to each of the buttons on the Formatting toolbar to see what it does

Activity 4: Formatting text using the Format-Font menu

1. If necessary, open the document Word Practice One that you downloaded earlier

2. Select the entire document by holding the Ctrl key down and typing A

3. Practice formatting the selected text using the formatting menu and by using keyboard shortcuts:

4. When you are through, close word and save your changes.

Keyboard shortcuts:

Font and font size:

CTRL+SHIFT+F

Change the font

CTRL+SHIFT+P

Change the font size

CTRL+SHIFT+>

Increase the font size

CTRL+SHIFT+<

Decrease the font size

CTRL+]

Increase the font size by 1 point

CTRL+[

Decrease the font size by 1 point

 

CTRL+D

Change the formatting of characters (Font command, Format menu)

SHIFT+F3

Change the case of letters

CTRL+SHIFT+A

Format letters as all capitals

CTRL+B

Apply bold formatting

CTRL+U

Apply an underline

CTRL+SHIFT+W

Underline words but not spaces

CTRL+SHIFT+D

Double-underline text

CTRL+I

Apply italic formatting

CTRL+SHIFT+K

Format letters as small capitals
