Methods and Materials of Teaching

Course Description:
This course is designed for teachers who have their own classrooms and are seeking alternative licensing through the Regional Alternative Licensing Center. The focus of the course is on Best Practices as described in the literature of content areas (mathematics, social studies, sciences, language arts and foreign language), national organizations associated with each of the content areas, and the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Teachers will be required to create lesson plans as well as a unit that encompasses techniques for teaching and assessment, research national standards and best practices, and develop and analyze classroom practices related to classroom management by conducting a case study.
This course is the fourth in a group of courses offered collaboratively by A-B Technical Community College and UNC Asheville designed to meet the certification needs of lateral entry teachers employed in NC Schools. There is consistency across classes with regards to requirements, grading and attendance policies. Each course includes technology components, presentations, chapter outlines/tests, textbook assignments and assessment.

Costs: A one time $20 non-refundable application fee for visiting students plus $267.30 for the three (3) credit hour course for in-state students. Non-resident student tuition and technology fee is $1454.85 for a three (3) credit hour course. Those teaching in a North Carolina school are entitled to in-state tuition rates.
