Good morning. Following are announcements for two online courses we are offering. Additionally, the attachment to this email describes Lateral Entry courses we have available. Please pass this information along to others who may be interested. Hope you are having a great summer!
EDUC 373: Math Methods II (3 cr hrs)
This course focuses on methods & materials for teaching
mathematics to high school students. There is a special emphasis placed
on teaching each of the content strands and preparing candidates to
diversify their instruction in a classroom. You will be participating in
a variety of activities and technology preparations, creating resources
and participating in teams on designing strategies for working with
students. You will be assessed on your content knowledge, pedagogy,
dispositions, and your ability to reflect on a connection between theory
and practice.

STAT 273: Statistics for High School Teachers (3 cr hrs)
e This is an introductory statistics course that covers the basic
concepts of statistics. It provides a theoretical foundation needed to
understand the fundamental practices of data collecting and analysis. It
gives the student significant hands-on experiences analyzing real data.
Topics include basic probability, sampling methods, descriptive statistics,
regression, and variance. There are no pre-requisites.

Fall/Spring 2009-10 Courses for Lateral Entry Teachers

Courses are being offered specifically for employed lateral entry teachers in North Carolina. These courses meet the Regional Alternative Licensing Center’s (RALC) standards. There are nine competencies that all lateral entry teachers must meet. Four of them are being met by the individual school districts. The other five are met through four 3-hour undergraduate courses described below.
Courses are taught by A-B Tech and UNC Asheville faculty each semester and offered online as well as through regional teleconferencing sites. There is consistency across classes with regard to requirements, grading, and attendance policies. Each course includes technology components, presentations, chapter outlines/tests, book readings, and assessment. An outline of the model for the 2009-10 academic year is as follows:

EDUC 373:Educational Psychology (taught online by UNC Asheville)

Using this model, lateral entry teachers can complete the five competencies taught at the college level in one calendar year Courses will originate from UNC Asheville and AB Technical College (fall only). The two teleconferencing courses will be teleconferenced to UNC Pembroke, Blue Ridge Community College, and points further west as needed. Online courses will be available regardless of location.
