Educational Psychology

For Lateral Entry Teachers

Course Description:    This course is designed for teachers who have their own classrooms and are seeking licensure through the Regional Alternative Licensing Center.  The course will emphasize the applications of psychological theory and research to the learning processes and the teaching of diverse learners and students with special needs. Developmental, behavioral, and cognitive psychological theories will be explored.  Participants will examine scientific-based research and methods, instructional practices, and classroom management techniques all taught through the lens of educational psychology.  Students will be exposed to the applied examination and understanding of interventions, instructional practices, disabilities, public school law, policy, assessment, and testing in educational settings.  Participants will earn 3 academic credits toward licensure.

 

                                                This course is the third in a group of courses offered collaboratively by A-B Technical Community College and UNC Asheville designed to meet the certification needs of lateral entry teachers employed in NC Schools.  There is consistency across classes with regards to requirements, grading and attendance policies.  Each course includes technology components, presentations, chapter outlines/tests, textbook assignments and assessment.

Delivery Mode:   This course will be delivered completely online in an asynchronous mode. Class discussions times will be designated in the syllabus.

Costs:                    A one time $20 non-refundable application fee for visiting students plus $267.30 for the three (3) credit hour course for in-state students.  Non-resident student tuition and technology fee is $1454.85 for a three (3) credit hour course. Teachers teaching in a North Carolina school are entitled to in-state tuition.
