This combined face-to-face and online session will provide a professional development opportunity for highly committed elementary teachers, teachers of reading, EC, LEP and Title I teachers who are committed to providing excellence in the classroom. This 20 contact hour course is based on the best principles of Scientifically Based Reading Research (SBRR). Teachers will receive the most current tools of SBRR based on the 5 components: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development and text comprehension, which have been proven to round out the teaching and learning process. The main thrust is to provide the necessary tools to create effective lesson plans for the classroom. Graphing calculators and
calculator-based laboratory equipment are great tools for teaching
integrated math and science. They promote inquiry learning and
are relatively inexpensive. This introductory workshop covers
the basics of using this equipment. Participants learn to use CBL to
explore a variety of science topics. Labs and activities are designed
for students of all abilities and complement the NRC’s National
Science Standards. Presenters

WILD is a wildlife based
education program that fosters responsible actions towards the
environment, wildlife and other natural resources.
This class will be offered as a joint collaborative training
effort between WRESA and the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, and
is open to all interested educators.

and other supplemental resource materials.

This workshop was developed to increase teacher awareness of standards-based instruction with a focus on inquiry-based pedagogy. Teachers will work on their own definition of inquiry while being exposed to the different levels of inquiry-based instruction. While being engaged in inquiry, teachers will learn techniques of questioning that support inquiry activities. Participants will take part in lessons that model teacher and student roles suggested by the National Science Education Standards. They will also learn how to shift science lessons toward inquiry. Strategies encourage students to analyze their own choices. Dr. Rick Spurling, Assistant Superintendent, Mitchell County Schools, has done extensive research on bullying and has made presentations across the state.
